FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

First IDSA Match in North Texas
A Shooter's comments after the match.
January 24, 2005
Big kudos to the designer of the shape of the "5"
point zone. Very realistic, somebody should have thought of this before...
Scoring was fast and easy with the neutralized or not neutralized point system.
Minimum 2 hits per target to neutralize - more if you are too fast for your own
good, this worked well. If we only had a single shot to neutralize I think it would be
unrealistic (for handguns and some rifles-yeah, yeah there's always the
exception) and less fun for sure. The high point value penalty for Non-Threat and FTN get your attention quick-as it should!
In discussions on way home from match, we might
suggest lowering the "rest of the head" (the portion which is not 5 points) and "C" hits down
one more point to add even more realism and to force even better, or at least more,
hits. This is a minor fine tuning item and the point is if we are down to
nitpicking that finite at this early stage, things are will work out good.
I think the "self leveling" of the equipment will occur easier than we had hoped
also. Several shooters who brought 10 round magazines were giving serious
consideration to larger cap magazines before the next match (and more
importantly-for their own self defense). The advantage of hi capacity and
disadvantage of smaller power factor became obvious to even these new shooters.
Not belittling the new shooters, just saying the theory we started with appears
to be sound. I shot a double stack minor this trip, and am contemplating a
single stack major next trip for comparison to myself-always a 1911 but of
course!
The lack of rules and "solving the problem" (IE: shooting order) yourself format
is not only refreshing but also had veteran shooters, self included, "turreting"
targets trying to decide which threat to neutralize next-its both fun and
revealing when you don't have somebody saying shoot dis one, den dis one, den
dis one twice, etc. I really like it and feel its realistic.
When we fine tune a method for penalizing lack of using cover and a few other
minor issues to help keep it real, I think we will have about as much as you can
do on a square range, under a timer, without someone shooting back and still have
fun.
